🔐 Password Reset Self-Service

Reset your password quickly and securely

â„šī¸ Overview

The password reset self-service feature allows you to quickly and securely reset your account password without needing to contact an administrator. The entire process is automated and typically takes just a few minutes.

What You'll Need

  • The email address associated with your account
  • Access to that email inbox
  • About 5 minutes to complete the process
💡 Quick Tip: The password reset link expires after 1 hour for security reasons. Complete the reset process as soon as you receive the email.

1 How to Reset Your Password

Follow these steps to reset your password:

  1. Navigate to the Forgot Password page

Go to /forgot-password or click the "Forgot your password?" link on the login page.

  2. Enter your email address

Type the email address associated with your volunteer account in the "Email Address" field.

âš ī¸ Important: Make sure you enter the exact email address you used when registering. The system is case-insensitive, but the email must match exactly.
  3. Click "Send Reset Link"

Click the blue "Send Reset Link" button. If the email is in our system, you'll see a confirmation message.

  4. Check your email inbox

Open your email inbox and look for an email from the volunteer system with subject line similar to "Password Reset Request" or "Reset Your Password".

💡 Tip: If you don't see the email within 5 minutes, check your spam/junk folder. Some email providers filter automated messages.
  5. Click the reset link

Open the email and click the "Reset Password" button or link. This will take you to a secure page where you can create your new password.

âš ī¸ Security Note: The reset link expires after 1 hour. If your link has expired, you'll need to request a new one.
  6. Create your new password

Enter your new password in both the "New Password" and "Confirm Password" fields. Make sure they match exactly.

  7. Submit and login

Click "Reset Password" to save your new password. You'll be redirected to the login page where you can sign in with your new credentials.

✓ Success: You should now be able to log in with your new password!

2 If You Don't Receive the Email

If you haven't received the password reset email within 5-10 minutes, try these troubleshooting steps:

1. Check Your Spam/Junk Folder

Password reset emails are sometimes flagged as spam by email providers. Look in:

  • Spam or Junk folder
  • Promotions tab (Gmail)
  • Updates or Social tabs (Gmail)
  • Other/Clutter folder (Outlook)

2. Verify Your Email Address

Common email mistakes include:

  • Typos: Double-check for typos in your email address
  • Wrong domain: @gmail.com vs @googlemail.com, @yahoo.com vs @ymail.com
  • Old email: You may have registered with a different email address
  • Work vs Personal: Did you use your work or personal email?

3. Wait and Retry

Email delivery can sometimes be delayed. Wait 10-15 minutes before requesting another reset link.

4. Check Email Filters

If you use email filters or forwarding rules, they might be interfering with delivery. Check your email settings.

5. Add to Safe Senders

To ensure you receive future emails from the system, add the sender email address to your contacts or safe senders list.

đŸšĢ Still No Email? If you've tried all these steps and still haven't received the email, contact your organization administrator. They can verify your account email address and assist with password reset.

3 Security & Best Practices

Creating a Strong Password

When resetting your password, follow these guidelines:

  • Minimum length: Use at least 8-12 characters
  • Mix character types: Include uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols
  • Avoid common words: Don't use dictionary words or personal information
  • Make it unique: Don't reuse passwords from other websites
  • Use a passphrase: Consider using a memorable phrase with numbers/symbols

💡 Password Strength Examples

Password Security Tips

  • Never share your password with anyone, including administrators
  • Use a password manager to generate and store complex passwords
  • Change your password regularly (every 90 days recommended)
  • Don't write passwords down or store them in plain text
  • Log out when using shared computers
  • Enable two-factor authentication if available
âš ī¸ Phishing Warning: Legitimate password reset emails will only ask you to click a link to reset your password. Never enter your password directly in an email. The system will never ask for your password via email.

4 Troubleshooting Common Issues

🔴 "This email is not registered" error

Reason: The email address you entered is not associated with any account.

Solutions:

  • Try a different email address you may have used
  • Check for typos in your email
  • You may need to register for a new account
  • Contact your organization administrator to verify your account status
🔴 "Reset link has expired" error

Reason: Password reset links expire after a set time period (usually 1 hour) for security.

Solution: Go back to the forgot password page and request a new reset link. Complete the reset process within the time limit.

🔴 "Passwords do not match" error

Reason: The password you entered in the "New Password" field doesn't match what you entered in "Confirm Password".

Solution: Carefully re-type your desired password in both fields. Watch for accidental spaces or caps lock.

🔴 "Password does not meet requirements" error

Reason: Your new password doesn't meet the system's security requirements.

Solution: Make sure your password meets the minimum requirements (usually 8+ characters, mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols).

🔴 Reset link doesn't work or page won't load

Possible causes:

  • Link was clicked from a text-only email client that split it across lines
  • Your browser is blocking the page
  • Temporary server issue

Solutions:

  • Try copying the full URL and pasting it into your browser
  • Try a different browser
  • Clear your browser cache and cookies
  • Request a new reset link

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the reset link remain valid?
Password reset links typically expire after 1 hour for security reasons. If your link has expired, simply request a new one.
Can I use my old password again?
Although it's not a good practice to re-use passwords, we don't restrict your choice of passwords.
How many times can I request a password reset?
There is no limit to the number of password resets you request. If you are experiencing issues, please contact support.
Will resetting my password log me out of other devices?
In most cases, yes. For security, changing your password will invalidate all existing login sessions, requiring you to log in again on all devices with your new password.
What if I don't have access to my email anymore?
If you no longer have access to the email address associated with your account, your organization administrator can dissociate your account from the organization. You could then register a new account with your organization. If you need additional help, contact support
Is the password reset process secure?
Yes. The system uses industry-standard security practices including encrypted connections (HTTPS), time-limited reset tokens, and secure password hashing. Reset links can only be used once and expire quickly.
I remember my password now. Do I need to complete the reset?
No. If you've requested a password reset but remember your password, you can simply ignore the reset email and continue logging in with your current password. The reset link will expire automatically.
