Organization Switching
This article describes how to easily switch organizations.
đ Switching Between Organizations
Learn how to manage multiple organization memberships and switch contexts
Overview
Volunteer Genie allows you to be a member of multiple organizations simultaneously. This is perfect if you volunteer for different groups, manage events for multiple organizations, or participate in cross-organizational activities.
The organization switcher in your navigation bar lets you quickly change which organization you're currently working with, so you can access the right events, volunteers, and settings without logging out and back in.
Where to Find the Organization Switcher
The organization dropdown is located in the top navigation bar
Look for the organization name or dropdown menu in your navigation bar (typically in the top-right area, near your profile). Click it to see all organizations you belong to.
How to Switch Organizations
- Locate the organization switcher in your navigation bar at the top of the page. It displays your currently active organization name.
- Click the organization name or dropdown arrow to open the menu.
- Select a different organization from the list. You'll see all organizations where you have an active membership.
- The page will refresh and you'll now be working within the context of your newly selected organization. All events, volunteers, and settings will update accordingly.
Your current organization choice is saved. When you return to Volunteer Genie, you'll automatically be in the last organization you were working with.

Your permissions and access level may be different in each organization. For example, you might be an Admin in one organization and a Member in another.
Understanding Multi-Organization Permissions
Different Roles Across Organizations
You can have different access levels in different organizations. Common scenarios include:
- Admin in Organization A, Member in Organization B: Full administrative access in one, basic volunteer access in another
- Lead in multiple organizations: Team leadership responsibilities across different groups
- Guest volunteer: Limited access for specific events only
Access Level Indicators
Your current access level is typically displayed near your name or in the organization switcher. Common levels include:
- đĨ Guest: Can view and sign up for public events
- đĢ Member: Full volunteer access to organization events
- â Lead: Can manage specific events and volunteer assignments
- đ Admin: Full organizational management and settings access
Common Use Cases
Scenario 1: Managing Events for Multiple Organizations
Example: You're a volunteer coordinator for both a local food bank and a community theater.
- Switch to "Community Food Bank" to create this week's meal distribution event
- Switch to "Metro Community Theater" to manage volunteers for the upcoming production
- Both organizations maintain separate volunteer pools, templates, and settings
Scenario 2: Volunteering Across Different Groups
Example: You volunteer with your workplace charity team and also your neighborhood association.
- Switch to "TechCorp Volunteers" to check your upcoming corporate volunteer days
- Switch to "Oak Street Neighborhood Association" to sign up for the community cleanup
- View all your commitments in one place, organized by organization
Scenario 3: Cross-Organizational Events
Example: Multiple organizations are collaborating on a large event.
- Each organization maintains its own event and volunteer assignments
- Switch between organizations to coordinate respective volunteer teams
- Each org's admins control their own settings and templates independently
Troubleshooting
Best Practices
Use descriptive organization names to make it easy to identify which context you're working in. For example: "Lincoln Elementary PTA" vs "Downtown Food Bank" vs "TechCorp Volunteers".
Always verify you're in the correct organization before creating events or making administrative changes. Look at the organization name displayed in your navigation bar.
Configure email notifications separately for each organization based on your involvement level. You might want all notifications from organizations you admin, but only assignment reminders from organizations where you're a volunteer.
When communicating with volunteers or viewing reports, remember that information is filtered by your currently selected organization. Switch contexts as needed to get the complete picture across all your organizations.
